Quick answer: Scottie Scheffler shot a 9-under 61 in Friday's second round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, tying the tournament course record at TPC Southwind. He reached 11 under and led Sungjae Im and Viktor Hovland by three after 36 holes. The FedExCup leader made 11 birdies against two bogeys and led the field in both approach play and putting for the round.
Five straight birdies changed the tournament immediately
Scheffler began Friday three strokes behind the opening lead after a 2-under 68. He erased that distance almost immediately, opening with birdies on Nos. 1 through 5 and turning in 30. By the end of the day, his 61 had moved him six strokes relative to the lead and placed the rest of the field in pursuit.
The round was not clean in the conventional sense. Scheffler made two bogeys, but he answered them with enough attacking golf to finish with 11 birdies. The PGA Tour's official notes say he became only the ninth player in the ShotLink era, which began in 2003, to shoot 61 or better while recording multiple bogeys or worse. Justin Rose's final-round 60 at the 2022 RBC Canadian Open was the most recent previous example.
That distinction explains the force of the score. Scheffler did not require a mistake-free card. His best stretches were so productive that two dropped shots barely slowed him.
The record tie was built from both sides of the ball
It is tempting to describe every 61 as a hot-putting round. Scheffler's performance was more complete. He led the second-round field in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green at 3.479 and Strokes Gained: Putting at 3.868. The combination is particularly dangerous because approach play is already the most dependable part of his game.
Through two rounds, Scheffler led the field in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green at 6.642 and total birdies with 14. Sungjae Im was next with 13 birdies. Those numbers show that the three-shot lead was not simply created by one run of converted long putts. Scheffler was repeatedly putting the ball in positions from which birdie was realistic.
The 61 tied the tournament course record previously recorded by four players, most recently Rose during the third round in 2023. Scheffler's previous best at TPC Southwind had been 65, a number he had shot four times. He lowered that personal course mark by four strokes on a day when the temperature reached 100 degrees and the peak heat index reached 110.
The 61 belongs on a very short personal list
Friday marked Scheffler's fourth score of 61 or lower in 638 PGA Tour rounds. His career low remains the 59 he shot during the 2020 FedExCup Playoffs at TPC Boston. He added a 60 at the 2026 Travelers Championship and a 61 in the opening round of the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, an event he went on to win.
The list demonstrates both his ceiling and the different outcomes that can follow a historic round. Scheffler finished tied for fourth after the 2020 score, lost the 2026 Travelers Championship in a playoff and converted the Byron Nelson 61 into a victory. A record number creates opportunity; it does not complete the tournament.
That is especially relevant at TPC Southwind. Water and demanding approach angles can change the leaderboard quickly. Scheffler still has 36 holes to play, with Im and Hovland close enough to punish any extended mistake.
The three-shot lead has its own history
This is Scheffler's 22nd career 36-hole lead or co-lead on the PGA Tour. He converted nine of the previous 21 into victories. That overall record is strong without making the outcome automatic.
The more specific precedent is imposing. Scheffler had previously led by at least three strokes after 36 holes three times. He led the 2022 Masters by five and won by three, led the 2024 Memorial Tournament by three and won by one, then led the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson by six and won by eight. He converted all three.
Hovland and Im therefore face a difficult strategic problem. Waiting for the leader to retreat has not worked when Scheffler owns this much separation. They need to continue creating birdies while protecting against Southwind's penalty areas. Ludvig Aberg, four shots behind at 7 under after a 65, remains close enough to join that pressure.
The FedExCup makes the lead more consequential
The FedEx St. Jude Championship is the first of three playoff events. The winner receives 750 FedExCup points under the Tour's revised 2026 structure, and the tournament carries a $20 million purse with $3.6 million to the champion.
Scheffler entered Memphis first in the standings, 794 points ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick. That advantage means he does not need to chase the postseason from behind. Another high finish would protect or expand the reward he built across the regular season, while every rival needs a major point swing to reduce it.
The 2026 reduction from the 2,000 points previously available for a playoff victory makes that regular-season work harder to erase. Scheffler was already positioned to benefit. Moving three strokes clear at the opener increases the pressure because he is now threatening to capture the largest available award before the field even reaches the BMW Championship.
His season provides little expectation of a sudden disappearance. Scheffler arrived with 11 top-five finishes in 17 starts, the most on Tour, and five runner-up finishes. He is pursuing a second victory of the year after winning The American Express.
A different tournament is happening around 50th
While Scheffler controls the top, the most fragile competition is unfolding near the advancement line. Only the top 50 after Memphis reach next week's BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club. Those players also qualify for the 2027 Signature Events.
Through 36 holes, Im, Jordan Spieth and Sudarshan Yellamaraju were projected to move inside the top 50. Michael Brennan, Matt McCarty and Maverick McNealy were projected to fall outside it. Spieth's position was particularly visible: he entered 54th and was projected 44th after reaching 6 under and a tie for fifth.
That creates two simultaneous versions of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Scheffler is trying to turn the regular-season lead into control of the entire playoff race. Bubble players are competing for another week and for access to the Tour's most valuable events next season.
The next move belongs to the field
A record-tying Friday is not a Sunday trophy. Scheffler still must manage heat, water, firmer weekend decisions and a leaderboard containing Hovland, Im and Aberg. But the 61 clarified what the challengers must do.
They cannot rely only on Scheffler making mistakes. He made two bogeys Friday and still tied the record. They need to match the quality of a player who led the field in approach play and putting on the same day, then sustain that standard long enough to erase three strokes.
The FedExCup format gives Scheffler more protection for his regular-season advantage. Friday's 61 suggested he has no interest in depending on it.
